Harley Fellowships


The J.B. Harley Awards
for 2013


The Trustees of the J B Harley Research Fellowships Trust Fund are pleased to announce the twentieth series of awards, offering support to assist research in the map collections of the United Kingdom.

Awards have been made to:

Dr Jordana Dym (Skidmore College, New York, USA), 'The cartography of western travel writers, 1600–1930' (2 weeks)

Dr G.E.M. Fiske (independent scholar, USA), 'British cartography of Afghanistan on the eve of the First Anglo-Afghan War of 1839–1942' (3 weeks)

Imants Ļaviņš (University of Riga, Latvia), 'The depiction of eastern Europe and Scandinavia in early medieval Islamic cartography' (2 weeks)


For the period 2013-2016, in addition to the normal J. B. Harley Fellowships there are also Harley-Delmas Fellowships funded by the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation. Successful applicants researching the history of cartography during the European Renaissance to the Enlightenment c.1400-c.1800 will be eligible for a Harley-Delmas Fellowship. All applicants, however, should apply for a J. B. Harley Fellowship. Eligibility for a Harley-Delmas award will be decided by the Selection Committee of the Trustees.
