Harley Fellowships


The J.B. Harley Awards
for 2009


The Trustees of the J B Harley Research Fellowships Trust Fund are pleased to announce the sixteenth series of awards, offering support to assist research in the map collections of the United Kingdom.

Awards have been made to:

Mr Brett M Bennett (University of Texas at Austin): ‘The Cartographic History of State Forestry in the British Indian Ocean 1850-1950’ (4 weeks)

Mr Spyridon Gkounis (The Ionian University, Greece, Department of History): ‘Desertum et mare; Depictions of Monsters and Monstrous Races in Medieval World Maps’ (2 weeks)

Ms Jamie McGowan (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign): ‘Conventional Signs, Imperial Designs: The Surveying and Mapping of Colonial Ghana, 1874-1963’ (4 weeks)

For the period 2007-2011, in addition to the normal J B Harley Fellowships there are also Harley-Delmas Fellowships funded by the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, for research on the history of cartography during the European Renaissance to the Enlightenment c.1400-c.1800.

The second Harley-Delmas Fellow is Dr. S. Max Edelson (Associate Professor of History at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) : ‘The New Map of Empire: Cartography and Colonization in British America, 1763-1783’ (6 weeks)
